Tips for a Comfortable Flight!
Long flights can be the absolute worst, but with some preparation, you can make the journey a little less painful. Whether you’re flying across the globe for business or leisure, here are some essential tips to help you survive—and even thrive—during your extended time in the air.
1. Choose Your Seat Wisely
Window Seat: Best for privacy and sleeping. Also great if you like scenic views and taking pictures. The views from up above can be breathtaking!
Middle Seat: What can I say? This seat sucks.
Aisle Seat: Best for easy access to the bathroom—especially if you’re starting your vacation with some in-flight cocktails.
Avoid the Rear: The back of the plane tends to be louder, and when it’s time to get off, you have to wait for everyone else to gather their things and disembark before you. Time literally stands still during this process.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drink Water: Airplane cabins have low humidity, which leads to dehydration and dry skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the flight. It’s easier said than done, though, because if you don’t have an aisle seat, you might annoy whoever is sitting next to you by getting up to use the bathroom every five minutes.
Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: These can dehydrate you further. Opt for herbal teas or other non-caffeinated beverages. This one isn’t for everyone, but at least try!
3. Move Around
Stretch and Walk: If it’s a long flight, try to get up at least once or twice to get your circulation going. Stretch often to avoid becoming stiff. Except if you’re flying Spirit—at that point, you’re most likely rolled up into a tiny ball and stuffed into your assigned space.
Exercise: Simple exercises like ankle circles or knee lifts can help reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is actually really dangerous, so if you’re at risk, take this one seriously. Wear compression stockings to promote circulation and lower the risk of blood clots. Compression socks will also stop your legs from swelling.

4. Comfort Is Key
Dress in Layers: Cabin temperatures can fluctuate, so wear comfortable, breathable layers. If the plane is sitting idle for a while, it tends to get hot and uncomfortable pretty quickly.
5. Pack Essentials in Your Carry-On
Snacks: Pack lots of snacks! You never know what you’ll be in the mood for. I always have some kind of chocolate, something salty, gummy candy, and, of course…beef jerky.
Entertainment: Check to make sure your airline has in-flight entertainment. If not, bring a book, tablet, or e-reader loaded with movies, TV shows, or audiobooks. It helps tremendously to pass the time! Don’t forget headphones, but if you do, most airlines have some available for purchase.
Toiletries: Keep items like facial wipes, moisturizer, and lip balm handy to freshen up during the flight. A little self-care helps pass the time, too.

6. Manage Jet Lag
Adjust Your Schedule: Before your trip, gradually shift your sleep schedule to match your destination’s time zone. I’ve never done this, but you should definitely try it.
Stay Active: Once you arrive, get outside and expose yourself to natural light to help reset your internal clock. or, head to the bar and treat yourself to a drink or mocktail.


7. Practice Relaxation Techniques
Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing can help reduce stress and improve relaxation.
Meditation Apps: Consider using meditation or relaxation apps to help pass the time and stay calm.
8. Stay Engaged and Productive
Work: If you have work to do, use the flight time to catch up on tasks.
Grow: Use this time to write out your goals and manifest your dreams. I always so I am going to do this, but I never do.
Beauty: Give yourself a mani with a fresh set of press-on nails. Not only does it pass the time, but you’ll be vacation-ready!
9. Health and Safety
Sanitize Your Area: Immediately wipe down your armrests, tray table, and any areas you’ll be touching during the flight. I’m not a germaphobe by any means, but trust me when I tell you: if you’re going to get sick from anywhere, it will be the plane!
